On November 19, 2025, Central Consolidated School District reported an incident at Shiprock High School involving a teacher who brought an item onto campus that was considered culturally inappropriate according to Navajo traditions. The district stated the teacher did not realize the item’s significance and described the situation as a misunderstanding.
Central Consolidated School District emphasized its commitment to respecting the cultural practices of students and families. “We are informing you of a situation that occurred today at Shiprock High School. A teacher brought a culturally inappropriate item onto campus for instructional purposes. It was a misunderstanding for the teacher not to recognize this; however, it infringes on Navajo cultural traditions and beliefs,” the district said in its statement.
The district also outlined steps being taken in response. “We are working to arrange for a medicine man to perform a cleansing ceremony for the school building starting Thursday morning, Nov. 20, at 6 a.m. The medicine man will be finished well before students arrive at school. Doors will open at 7:45 a.m.”
In addition, Central Consolidated School District issued an apology: “We apologize for this incident as we work to resolve this matter respectfully and in accordance with our community’s values.”
