Voters in the Central Consolidated School District will decide in the upcoming election whether to reauthorize a General Obligation (GO) Bond, which is set to expire. The bond funds are designated for repairs, maintenance, and upgrades across all seventeen schools in the district.

According to the district, reauthorizing the GO Bond will not result in an increase in property taxes. The funds would be used for various projects, including acquiring technology for student learning, upgrading building systems such as HVAC and electrical infrastructure, renovating or replacing aging school buildings like Newcomb Elementary and Tse Bit Ai Middle School, and improving facilities at Newcomb Middle School and Newcomb High School.

Other planned uses of the bond include remodeling agricultural barns at Newcomb and Shiprock to support career pathway programs, upgrading sports facilities, enhancing security systems, and updating intercom systems throughout the schools. The bond also serves as local matching funds for larger state-funded projects. Currently, the district’s local match requirement is 37% of project costs; with bond funding and potential waivers, more state resources could be accessed while reducing the financial burden on local taxpayers.

The district encourages community participation: “Because this measure is a reauthorization of an existing bond, voting to approve this measure will NOT increase your property taxes and will continue to enrich the education of our children by maintaining schools, classrooms, and school grounds. Make your voice heard on this important issue by participating in early voting beginning Tuesday, October 7 through Saturday, November 1, 2025 or by voting on Tuesday November 4th.”

Early voting begins October 7 at the San Juan County Clerk’s Office in Aztec. Additional early voting locations open from October 18 through November 1 at sites including Farmington Museum at Gateway Park, Farmington Public Library, Bloomfield Cultural Center, CCSD Business Office in Shiprock, and Newcomb Fire Station. Absentee ballots are available starting October 7; the last day for mailing absentee ballots is October 21.
