Central Consolidated School District has announced a one-hour delay for all schools on Tuesday, March 3, in observance of the upcoming lunar eclipse. The event is expected to begin at 1:44 a.m. and end around 6:30 a.m.
The district stated that this decision was made out of respect for the cultural and spiritual significance the lunar eclipse holds for many Diné families and staff. Traditional practices require observance during this period.
“After careful consideration, the district will implement a one-hour delay on Tuesday, March 3, to respect our community’s cultural and spiritual traditions.”
District officials considered several options before reaching this decision. They explored both delayed start times and the possibility of holding a remote learning day. According to consultations with the New Mexico Public Education Department, a two-hour delay would be classified as a half day, which could result in reduced K-12+ funding for schools and students. The remote learning option was dismissed due to limited preparation time and connectivity issues faced by some students at home.
“A remote learning day was also explored; however, given the limited preparation time and connectivity challenges many of our students face at home, it was determined that in-person instruction with a one-hour delay was the most equitable path forward for all students.”
The district acknowledged that making this choice was difficult. To support families on March 3, breakfast service will be adjusted so meals are simple and easy to pick up when students arrive at school.
“We want our families and staff to know this was not an easy decision. Out of respect for our community’s traditions, the following accommodations have been made:
Our food service team has modified breakfast service so that meals will be simple and easy for students to pick up upon arrival.”
Recognizing that some parents may need additional flexibility in drop-off times due to traditional observances, families are encouraged to notify their school if they anticipate arriving later than usual so accommodations can be made.
“The district understands that some parents and families may need additional time in the morning. We ask that you notify your school in advance, and we will make every effort to accommodate those arriving later than usual.”
The district also invited families to view its cultural presentation about the lunar eclipse on YouTube.
