One potentially negative effect of the oil boom in Southeastern New Mexico is the fact that there is not adequate housing for all the people descending upon the region – which, in addition to oil workers, includes executives, educators, construction workers and more.
In particular, Carlsbad's population has exploded since oil and gas in the Permian Basin became easier to reach with advances in drilling technology. There are now upward of 75,000 people in the city, which includes RV parks and work camps.
Immigrants as well as American workers are flocking to Carlsbad. The Albuquerque Journal notes that 40 percent of the current population of nearby Hobbs speaks a language other than English.
The ripple effect from the oil fields has been felt throughout the region's communities, including schools. Twenty-four teachers with international backgrounds have come to Carlsbad to work with students, and the school district is estimating the student population to grow to more than 8,000 by 2023.
