An advertisement paid by New Mexico House GOP hopeful Yvette Herrell suggests that her opponent and former chair of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association (NMOGA), Claire Chase, endorses the "New Green Deal" sponsored by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The ad states that Chase, in her official capacity, refused to oppose the Energy Transition Act.
The law "sets aggressive goals for renewable energy development and aims to ease the economic pains of closing the coal-fired San Juan Generating Station near Farmington, New Mexico," according to KOB 4.
In the ad, two men discuss Chase's inaction on the Energy Transition Act, saying the "Santa Fe insider" failed to stand up for the entire energy industry.
Chase's campaign manager Mike Berg denounced the ad as absurd. The New Mexico Oil and Gas Association also condemned the ad.
“With more than 1,000 members, NMOGA is committed to protecting the employees, businesses, and industry leaders who are responsible for more than 100,000 New Mexico jobs and $3.1 billion in funding for our state’s budget and public schools,” NMOGA spokesman Robert McEntyre told KOB 4. “To suggest otherwise is simply false.”
Herrell, Chase and businessman Chris Mathys are battling for the GOP nomination to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Xochitl Torres Small.
