Representatives Kelly K. Fajardo, Rebecca Dow and David Gallegos, recently sent a letter to the state’s Attorney General regarding whether meetings held by the Children’s Youth and Families Department (CYFD) violated the law.
The Representatives, all Republicans, were concerned that the meeting violated the Open Meetings Act. The department did not allow the meeting to be open to the public. The meeting was part of a foster care reform task force initiative or House Joint Memorial 10 Task Force.
The House Joint Memorial 10 was passed last year by the state legislature. It is intended to help with reforming New Mexico’s Child Protective Services Division.
“Unfortunately, CYFD has decided to conduct these task force deliberations in a series of closed meetings where the public and other interested parties were never notified or invited," Fajardo said. “I have lost count of the number of complaints I have received from across the state relating to the way in which this task force continues to operate.”
