SAN JUAN COLLEGE: Memorandum of understanding to guide collaboration for development of skilled workforce at San Juan Generating Station

Event

San Juan College issued the following announcement on June 29.

San Juan College School of Energy, the City of Farmington, Farmington Electric Utility System and Enchant Energy on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding to develop programs that will result in the skilled workforce required for the ongoing safe and efficient operation of San Juan Generating Station with the planned carbon capture utilization and storage.

Under the memorandum the School of Energy will support professional development training for current and new employees at the plant. The school will also train a new workforce with the skills needed for the ongoing control, operation and maintenance of the plant and future carbon capture facilities. In addition, the School of Energy plans to develop a one-year certification and a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree that will include the technical skills and training needed to work in coal-fired power plants equipped with carbon capture technology. The carbon capture contractor, Kiewit Power Constructors, calculates that the carbon capture island alone will require 2,000,000 worker-hours in direct construction, union labor to build.

In partnership with the City of Farmington, Enchant Energy Corporation has obtained the right to acquire a 95% interest in the 847 MW coal-fired San Juan Generating Station effective June 30, 2022 when the current owners exit the plant. Enchant Energy plans to add carbon capture, utilization and storage to San Juan Generating Station enabling the plant to continue operation through 2035. With carbon capture utilization storage added, San Juan Generating Station will be less carbon intensive than the clean air standards for carbon dioxide emissions as mandated by the New Mexico Energy Transition Act.
