San Juan College issued the following announcement on Nov. 4.
This year marks the fifth anniversary of the School of Energy’s grand opening of its new building on San Juan College’s (SOE) main campus. During her opening remarks at the event, President Dr. Toni Hopper Pendergrass stated, “This school is much more than just a new building…it’s about helping students realize their dreams.”
And the School of Energy has done just that – prepare students for their dream careers in the energy industry.
Through the generosity of industry partners, students benefit from incomparable educational experiences utilizing real-world equipment in state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms. The school provides training in a broad range of energy and industrial fields including Industrial Process Operator; Industrial Maintenance Mechanic; Instrumentation, Controls and Electrical Technology; Industrial, Occupational and Commercial Construction Safety; Tribal Energy Management Studies; Petroleum Technology; Natural Gas Compression; and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
The School of Energy also houses the Sherman Dugan Museum of Geology. The Dugan collection is one the most comprehensive displays in the Four Corners area and has been noted for its quantity and diversity.
The newly appointed dean for the School of Energy, Alicia Corbell commented, “We have quietly celebrated where we have been, both physically and academically, these last five years, but we are truly excited for the future educational opportunities for our students and the energy industry as a whole.”
The School’s newest endeavor is carbon capture and sequestration, and plans to offer the training needed to convert the coal-fired San Juan Generating station to become a carbon capture facility. With multiple carbon capture facilities across the United States, there is a strong need for a highly skilled workforce.
In addition, the School of Energy was recently named a Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Sustainability by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. The SOE is exploring four areas of emerging technologies -- electrical vehicle technology, repurposing and recycling lithium ion batteries, water security and sustainability, and hydrogen power.
Soon the school will augment training for instrumentation controls and electrical technology in wind and solar energy. With newly purchased wind and solar trainers, students learn installation and maintenance on real-world equipment that will help them transition seamlessly into a career.
“The School of Energy prides itself on offering day and night classes to those working full or part-time,” continues Corbell. “Because of the knowledge and skills obtained at the School of Energy, major employers throughout the nation recruit graduates for a variety of career pathways. San Juan College stands ready to provide the skills and training needed to help students find their dream job and secure a future for themselves and their families.”
