San Juan College issued the following announcement on Dec. 1.
The San Juan College Choir will present their virtual Fall End-of-Semester Student Showcase, How Can I Keep From Singing, A Production During a Time of Uncertainty, Tuesday, December 8, at 7 p.m.
The pre-recorded showcase will feature students performing their final exams in a COVID-safe manner.
The concert will include a variety of genres and styles of vocal music. Members of the choral ensembles have prepared and recorded folksongs including How Can I Keep From Singing, All My Trials, and The Parting Glass. From the Broadway stage, the choirs will perform selections including Children Will Listen from Sondheim’s Into the Woods and the Greek chorus introduction from Little Shop of Horrors. From the contemporary genre, the choirs will feature Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of Over the Rainbow, Simon and Garfunkel’s Scarborough Fair, and James Taylor’s Shed a Little Light. The men will be featured on a Barbershop arrangement of Stand by Me, as well as holiday tunes, while the ensemble will showcase holiday favorites such as Snow and Sisters from Erving Berlin’s White Christmas.

No audience was permitted access to the classrooms and social distancing and other health/safety requirements were observed. As has been practiced in classrooms this fall, students in the music program ensembles have been positioned to adhere to social distance protocols. All of these events were pre-recorded in a COVID-19 safe manner. Face masks were worn when possible and when musical instruments were not in play.
All music classes are being converted to an online format on November 30.
