This weekend crews were dispatched Sunday afternoon to a report of two people in the river. Teams from San Juan County Fire & Rescue - District 1 Valley San Juan County Fire & Rescue - District 2 Flora Vista and San Juan County Fire & Rescue - District 8 Hart Valley all responded to various locations on both sides of the river. We always set up multiple points along both sides of the river downstream from where the incident is reported so that we can be prepared if they are still in the water. This incident was no different, even though they were reported to be out and on the bank.
As we were setting up we had the opportunity to meet with multiple people who live in the surrounding community who openly invited us onto their properties and allowed us to set up whatever operations we needed. Several of them joined us to help keep watch as we were setting up. Thankfully, once we were able to get through the thick brush along the shore both people were found safe and on the bank. They were removed from the bank and taken to medics for evaluation. One was transported to the hospital for evaluation of minor injuries sustained during the ordeal, the other was returned to their vehicle uninjured.
We want to thank the amazing citizens that welcomed us onto their property and assisted in the search. Our efforts were significantly improved because of their willingness to help complete strangers.
