Earlier this week crews from several SJCFR districts responded to the area of the Cox Canyon Arch for a report of a person having chest pain. When crews arrived they found the person who had been hiking in the area. It was quickly determined the location would be challenging to get EMS crews in an ambulance to him. Due to the remote location, the dispatcher made the decision to send San Juan Regional Medical Center's Air Care helicopter on the initial dispatch. Our crews quickly worked to clear an area for the helicopter to land near the patient. While they were working the helicopter landed at a different location and the crew from Air Care made their way up to the patient to start care. After the area was cleared of brush and debris, the pilot repositioned the helicopter closer to the patient. The Air Care providers found the patient to be having a serious cardiac condition and they were flown to SJRMC for cardiac care. To our knowledge, they had a favorable outcome.
We want to thank everyone involved in this incident. The first responder agencies in our community are a tight-knit group that works quickly together to ensure the best possible outcomes for every person we contact. From the dispatcher to the staff at SJRMC, this person had all the right people on their side.
