From January 20, 2023 post.
Over the last three days the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating three separate threats of school violence within the Central Consolidated School District. At this time, we have two of the juvenile suspects, age 15 and 16, in custody and they have been remanded to the Juvenile Detention Center. We are only steps away from identifying the last remaining suspect and bringing that person into custody.
The Sheriff’s Office, as well as our partnering agencies, take these kinds of threats very seriously. We will use every resource at our disposal to identify and bring the individuals responsible to justice. As you are all a very aware, it wasn’t long ago when we had a school shooting in our community. It devastated all of us and we will not let these threats slide. These threats are not a joke, as one of the juvenile suspects stated he did it for “giggles”. Our office, as well as Juvenile Probation, have zero tolerance for any threats made against our children. Parents, please speak with your children and ensure that they are not getting involved in this type of action. There are serious consequences that range from probation, all the way to federal charges. Please encourage them to say something if they see or know something. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is committed to our community and the protection of our children.
Sheriff Shane Ferrari has a message for our community, “We take these threats very seriously, especially with the tragedy we’ve already had in our community and will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. We will use every resource we have to track down the source of a threat. These foolish acts terrorize our community, disrupt the educational process, and waste scarce law enforcement resources. We encourage parents to talk to your children about how to properly use social media and emphasize that threats to our schools, students, and faculty are no joke.”
