Shiprock High School students have claimed victory in the Fall 2024 Stock Market Game, a competition hosted by the SIFMA Foundation. The game involves managing a simulated $100,000 portfolio over three months, providing students with practical experience in economics and finance.
Senior student Tallehatchi King expressed newfound interest in investing due to the program. He stated, "I'm just looking to invest, you know, make my money work for me.” Initially believing it was only a class assignment, he remarked, "I wasn't really too sure it was a whole like actual competition."
Participants were required to research stocks and monitor their performance within a specific trading period. King focused on mutual funds and ETFs, using insights from his dual credit class and independent research. He said, "I mainly looked into like mutual funds and ETFs... I had to research it myself to get first place.”
Economics teacher Brian Dixon emphasized the importance of staying informed about economic events. He noted that students work in groups to track their stocks weekly and highlighted the broader economic awareness fostered by the program. Dixon stated, "They're going to be a lot more invested into the overall economy...they can also invest into society."
King's strategic choices secured him first place in the competition. The SIFMA Foundation recognized Shiprock High School for its exceptional performance.
The Stock Market Game not only teaches stock market principles but also enhances financial literacy skills essential for future challenges. It promotes long-term saving and investment while supporting various academic subjects.
Both Dixon and King acknowledged the potential of this educational approach to inspire lifelong interest in investing. King commented on gaining insight into future investments: "it gave me a lot more insight and knowledge about what to expect when I do start investing."
The achievement of Shiprock High School illustrates how such programs can prepare students for informed decision-making post-graduation.
Dixon plans to enroll his class again in the upcoming semester's Stock Market Game.
