San Juan College issued the following announcement on July 13.

With a top priority of ensuring students achieve their educational goals, all while maintaining a safe learning environment, San Juan College plans to offer classes this fall utilizing a variety of techniques.

“This will include offering classes in a four different ways – face-to-face, traditional online, online live, and hybrid classes,” explains Dr. Adrienne Forgette, vice president for Learning at San Juan College. “The important thing we want students to know is that while this may be different, our instructors are working diligently to design classes that are engaging and provide a positive and enjoyable experience.”

“It’s important that students continue moving forward with their education – even during these trying times,” she continues. “San Juan College provides an affordable option, close to home, that will help them to secure their future.”

Programs that require a considerable amount of hands-on-learning, such as technical education and healthcare classes, will be held face-to-face. To adhere to safe social distancing standards, some classes may be limited in size. In the instance where labs are required, the class may be divided where a portion of the students meet in the classroom, while others meet in labs and then alternate.

“Recognizing that all students may not learn as well in an online environment, we will offer some sections of developmental and gateway courses, face-to-face,” Dr. Forgette added. “These courses are those that help students master the skills needed to succeed in their chosen field of study.”

To provide added flexibility for students and enhance social distancing measures, most fall courses will be offered in a traditional online fashion. These courses do not have a set time to meet, which allows students to attend class when it’s most convenient for their schedule. Classes are carefully designed to ensure students master the objectives. Instructors will guide them through learning activities and hold virtual office hours.

Live online courses also will be offered this fall, which will be delivered similar to face-to-face classes, only virtually. The classes are offered at a set time with an instructor present.

Classes offered in a hybrid fashion will incorporate both face-to-face and online learning. For example students enrolled in a science course may attend class online during a scheduled time, but meet face-to-face for lab assignments. Another example may be where two groups of students alternate meeting face-to-face one day a week, and then online on a different day.

“Helping ensure our students succeed is paramount,” Dr. Forgette said. “Advisors and staff are ready and available by phone and online to help students apply and register for upcoming classes. As we move into the fall, our plan is to complement the online services with limited on-campus services, as it is deemed safe and in compliance with state public health orders.”

Health safety measures are a critical component. Following the state’s public health order, everyone on campus is required to wear a face mask. The college is adhering to CDC recommended cleaning and safety guidelines, including providing hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the campus.

In addition, the College has resources available to help with computer and technology needs, as well as assistance with food and basic necessities. Students needing additional assistance can call 505-326-3311 or contact the San Juan College Student Achievement Center at achievement@sanjuancollege.edu. More information about the structure of fall classes and resources are available at Fall Classes 2020  and www.sanjuancollege.edu/coronavirus.
