SAN JUAN COLLEGE: SJC Tree Giveaway

Trees

San Juan College issued the following announcement on Sept. 4.

For the second year in a row, San Juan College will give away free trees to the community.  However, this year, the trees will be distributed through the San Juan College Harvest Food Hub.

The SJC Harvest Food Hub was recently established and works with farmers and businesses to increase sales and consumption of locally grown produce. Every week, the Hub distributes produce ordered by community members at their warehouse location at the Quality Center for Business off of College Boulevard.

San Juan College Grounds crew has grown more than 700 trees in twenty varieties to give to community members and students for this year’s give away. The bare root will be wrapped in burlap and ready for planting immediately.  Trees available include ponderosa, black walnut, white oak, Arizona cypress and many more. Last year, for the first tree give-away, more than 1000 trees were grown in the greenhouse on campus from seed and then given out around Abor Day.

“We are excited to partner with the Harvest Food Hub this year for our annual tree give-away,” exclaims Aiessa Thomas, Grounds Maintenance supervisor. “This partnership is a win-win.  Community members can support local vendors by purchasing fresh produce and pick up a tree to plant at the same time. September is an optimal time to plant trees.”

Trees can be pre-ordered through the San Juan College Harvest Food Hub.  The Hub takes orders each Monday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for Wednesday pick-up through an electronic form on the website. The free trees will be available for pick-up on September 9 and September 16 from the Harvest Food Hub at 5101 College Boulevard from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

To pre-order a tree, visit https://harvestfoodhub.localfoodmarketplace.com/Products on Monday, September 7 or Monday, September 14 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for Wednesday pick-up, or call 505-566-3119.
