San Juan College issued the following announcement on Nov. 24.
Celebrate the holiday season with a peaceful glow when San Juan College presents its gift to the community, Saturday, December 5.
For the 42nd year, a glimmering array of bags will shine from rooftops, along sidewalks, in courtyards, and select campus parking lots throughout the evening. While the Luminaria tradition continues, this year’s event has been modified to keep visitors safe. The campus will be closed to walkers; however, visitors can drive through campus beginning at 6 p.m. to enjoy the Luminara display.
Driving Route
Drivers will enter the College from Butler Avenue traveling north on Sunrise Parkway. They will then follow the marked route through the campus and exit at College Boulevard, where traffic will be required to turn south to 30th Street. Please note that the Pinon Hills Boulevard entrance to the College will be closed during the Luminaria display. As a courtesy, all drivers are asked to turn their lights off as they drive through the display. Drivers will also be asked to stay in their cars.
Sounds of the Season
The sounds of the season will be broadcast on San Juan College’s listener-supported radio station, KSJE 90.9-FM, and streamed at KSJE.com.
Volunteering for the Event
The Office of Student Engagement and Campus Life coordinates this event with help from the San Juan College Physical Plant, students, staff and community volunteers who set up and light the candles. San Juan College invites community members, families and small groups to contribute to this annual tradition by assisting with the set-up of bags on Thursday, December 3; Friday, December 4; or lighting the candles at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 5. After the evening display, small groups are invited to help with clean-up and the chance to take home luminaria bags.
For further information on this event or to volunteer, contact the San Juan College Office of Student Engagement and Campus Life at 505-566-3403 or luminarias@sanjuancollege.edu.
