Follow the Cadets:
A couple weeks ago our cadets went through Crisis Intervention training where they learn to safely and effectively manage encounters with people in crisis, which can be caused by anything from mental illness, drugs, alcohol, or stress. Through effective training, officers learn to identify signs and symptoms of crisis and how to utilize a range of stabilization and de-escalation techniques. They also learn about disposition options, community resources, and legal issues.
Part of the training during this week involves scenarios where actors emulate individuals in different stages of mental crisis. The cadets are taught, above and beyond all else, to de-escalate the situation. They are also taught how to safely handle situations where the individual becomes more violent.
The actors do have weapons in some scenarios that include could include firearms and simulated rounds. These simulated rounds are just like a bullet, with less velocity and a paint tip. Due to the dangers of these weapons, all cadets are required to wear protective gear like what you see Cadet McDonald wearing.
