From February 11, 2023 post.

On January 13, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office held our annual awards banquet where we celebrate the great work of our staff. Over the course of a few weeks, we will highlight some of these awards and the staff that earned them.

Today we recognize one of our recipients of a Lifesaving Medal. The Lifesaving Medal is presented to members whose quick actions and selfless response saved the life of another.

In the early morning hours of June 23, 2022, Deputy Horne responded to a medical call in which it was reported that a 14-year-old boy was choking on a piece of candy. Deputy Horne was first on scene and was directed to the victim who was unconscious and not breathing. Deputy Horne administered effective chest compressions which quickly cleared the obstruction from the victim's airway. The victim began breathing on his own and regained consciousness as fire and EMS personnel arrived. In a situation where life and death can be decided in seconds, Deputy Horne was there when he was needed and administered lifesaving care to a citizen of San Juan County. Deputy Horne did not draw attention to his heroic. We were only made aware of his actions when the captain of the responding engine company reached out to us to commend Deputy Horne. Deputy Horne handled himself with quiet dignity and professionalism by maintaining courageous calm in a life-threatening situation. Deputy Horne is to be commended for his actions and recognized for his humble professionalism in the discharge of his duties.
