These next few weeks will be busy ones for Carlsbad residents looking for activities. As we mentioned earlier this week, CavernFest will be going on Friday and Saturday. Activities will be in the downtown area, including free concerts and games on the district courthouse lawn.

The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s Age Friendly Committee will be hosting the second annual Green Chile Cheeseburger Cook-off from 5-7 p.m. June 17 in front of the Carlsbad Water Park. Charlie Ingraham will be performing from 7-9 p.m. that night at the gazebo, and the Carlsbad Water Park will be open from 6-8 p.m. and will be free to the first 100 visitors.

There will be food truck vendors available as well as the “Let’s Have Foam!” cannon. You can also purchase a $1 raffle ticket for a chance to win a grill, donated by Sutherlands. For more information, please contact the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce as (575) 887-6516. There was a fierce competition last year, and we look forward to hearing the results.

The Assistance League of Carlsbad’s Annual Ducky Affair will be held on Saturday June 24, also in the upper beach area in front of the water park. The annual fundraiser for Operation School Bell begins at 6 p.m. with a drawing to be held at 6:30 p.m. The grand prize this year is $1,500 in cash. There will be a free swim at the Carlsbad Water Park from 6-8 p.m. The local country band “Red Sky” will perform from 7-9 p.m. as part of our summer concert series.

We’ll begin our Independence Day celebration the following Saturday afternoon, on July 1.  We are calling Saturday’s event “FreedomFest” and it will include local bands, “Let if Foam” and other activities. We’ll have a special worship service on Sunday and a boat parade on Monday. Tuesday’s activities will include a parade, ceremony to honor veterans, concert down by the beach and fireworks. You can view a full schedule of events at https://cityofcarlsbadnm.com/#Fourth.

Thank you to the many wonderful sponsors who made this entire month of activities possible.

Congratulations to Fawakees, who celebrated a grand opening on June 2 inside of Cal’s Shade Western. The restaurant, open throughout the week except on Monday, offers dining and catering. Items on the menu include burgers, steak fingers, chicken tenders, catfish, quesadillas, street tacos and loaded fries. The menu even includes a listing of what local favorites are.  Please check it out!

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
