Carlsbad just completed an extremely busy weekend at the Bob Forrest Youth Sports Complex. The Senior League State baseball tournament was going on, and that one consisted of six teams of players from around the state. However, the biggest event of the weekend was the USSSA softball tournament, in which 85 teams participated. You probably saw a large number of softball families around town over the weekend. We’ve received an incredible amount of positive feedback about the quality of the tournament and the sports complex. Congratulations to our sports complex director, Steve Garza, and everyone who helps keep the facility in such good shape. Thanks as well to the many teams who spent their weekend in Carlsbad.

Wendy Austin, the City of Carlsbad’s Chief Financial Officer and Deputy City Administrator, was recently recognized as being a graduate of Leadership New Mexico’s Core Class of 2023. This was a ten-month program designed to understand and address current issues in New Mexico. Austin was a great representative of our community.

Her recent community involvement includes serving on the Carlsbad High Education Taskforce, the Carlsbad Economic Development Taskforce and Carlsbad Rotary Club. In 2021, she was recognized by the State of New Mexico Legislature for Outstanding Service, and she was also recognized as an outstanding Carlsbad Citizen. She now is one of 2,200 Leadership New Mexico alumni.

We were saddened to learn of the loss of Hayden Kimbley, who passed away July 7 at his home in Loving. Funeral arrangements are scheduled for Tuesday. Kimbley was an educator, then a real estate agent, then an insurance salesman. After his retirement, he became an avid woodworker. The City of Carlsbad knew him well because he was a strong supporter of the North Mesa Senior Center. In fact, he donated money for pool tables there and for a new HVAC. According to his obituary, contributions may be made to Brittany’s Hope. Thanks again to Hayden for his generous support of our program, and for always supporting everyone around him.

The Summer Concert series is still underway, thanks to a very generous donation by Creed Inc. We had a good attendance at this past event, and we hope to continue with that streak. “Pure Motivation”- a local classic rock band, will perform from 7-9 p.m. this Saturday, July 15.  We hope you can come out and enjoy the music.

 Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
