The Eddy County Fair is just around the corner. The event is scheduled for July 25-29 at the County Fairgrounds in Artesia, 3402 S. 13th Street.

Musical acts slated for performance include the Dirty River Boys, Uncle Kracker, Tell Runyan and headliner Kyle Park. There’s a faith and family night scheduled for July 27 that features Cochren and Company. There are also a number of competitions going on throughout the week, including the largest sunflower contest, a pecan contest, a chili-cook-off, and a cornhole tournament. There is also bull riding scheduled for Friday. Don’t forget to visit the exhibit hall and community center at the fair, where a wide variety of booths and displays are set up.

Of course, one of the primary purposes of the fair is the annual livestock presentation and auction. Best of luck to all of our local 4-H and FFA students who are participating. We know these students work very hard all year to prepare for the fair. Don’t forget that classes are also offered throughout the year. Softball and baseball all-star and state competitions are going on all week. This week, the Carlsbad National Little League had five softball teams go to state. Carlsbad’s Junior team finished second in their competition at Isleta. Carlsbad’s Majors, as of submission time, were still in the running for the state title. They beat Paradise Hills, 7-3, to advance to a game against Westgate. If that win that one, they’ll have to play again.  You can get frequent updates from the National League’s Facebook page.

We continue to receive positive feedback about the Bob Forrest Youth Sports Complex here from families who attended our tournament last week. Of course, one of the best things about the sports complex is the food. Carlsbad Hall of Famer Becky Thompson has the concessions contract at the sports complex, and many people will visit the complex just because they like Becky’s cooking so much.

Congratulations again to former Carlsbad High School Cavegirl pitcher Faith Aragon, who was named as Second Team All-American and New Mexico’s Softball Player of the Year by the website MaxPreps. She helped lead the Cavegirls to a state title with a 6-0 win over Farmington Piedra on May 13, according to the Carlsbad Current Argus. Aragon has signed to play softball for the University of Texas in El Paso, where we know she’ll be a success.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
