The Carlsbad National softball Majors team beat Westgate twice on Saturday to win the state District 2 Little League title. Carlsbad’s girls won their first game, 7-5, but they had to play again later that day because Westgate was undefeated up to that point. They won that game, 12-7. Next up for the Majors are the Regionals, July 24-28, in Waco, Texas.

Members of the state championship team are: Addy Smith, Braylee Hunt, Brooklyn Palma, Serenity Medrano, Shayla Blaine, Aliyah Sandate, Lily Pina, Kaylee Wallace, Bella Navarrette, Jade Hernandez, Camylla Uranga and Emory Bland. Congratulations to these players and best of luck at the upcoming regional tournament!

Another Carlsbad softball standout in the news: Aubrey Hernandez allowed two hits and one run over four innings as America’s Team KB Ernest beat Fede Navarra, 9-1. This is in a 18U competition for very high level travel teams. Aubrey also singled in the first inning to score the game’s first run. Hernandez finished her sophomore year with the Carlsbad Cavegirls last year and had an outstanding season. She was named second team all-state as a designated player.

Trevor Rogers update. The Florida Marlin was first placed on the injury list on April 21 with a left bicep strain. He was put back on the 60-day injury list on June 14. Rogers said he heard a pop when he was warming up in the bullpen before a June 10 rehab start, but said he doesn’t believe he will need surgery. He is currently 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 18 innings. We hope for a quick, safe recovery and a strong second half of the season.

Carlsbad Municipal Schools has released its calendar for the upcoming school year, and the first day of school will be on August 7. One of the biggest changes of the year is that “early release” day (usually one hour early) has been moved from Wednesdays to Mondays. This extra time is generally used for teacher training.  Some school officials have explained that Monday was selected because there are a number of Monday holidays already, and the school needs to obtain a certain number of hours for the year. The first school holiday this year is Labor Day, Sept. 4. New teachers will begin their orientation in late July. The back to school supply lists have also been provided and posted online. Multiple fundraisers are also going on right not to ensure that families in need will be provided with school supplies.

 Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
