A water main break occurred on December 15, 2024, near the old BIA compound in Shiprock, close to Wells Fargo Bank. Access to the site was delayed until the morning of December 16, when crews were able to begin their assessment and repair efforts.

The main water line was turned off at approximately 10:00 a.m. on December 16 to facilitate these repairs. The shutdown is anticipated to last for at least five hours, with an expected restoration of service by 3:00 p.m. However, this timeline may be extended if any complications arise during the repair process.

Areas affected by the water shut-off include the Central Consolidated School administrative compound, teacher housing, and facilities located south of the highway. In contrast, areas such as the Transportation Department north of Highway 64 and regions north of the river remain unaffected.

According to information from the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority, a map has been provided indicating suspected affected areas.
