The Newcomb Lady Skyhawks showcased their potential in a recent semifinal game, despite encountering difficulties during the second quarter. The team, under first-year coach Nathan Brady, started strong and demonstrated progress from previous efforts to enhance their competitive level.

Coach Brady emphasized that the team had been focused on "getting to that next level" after their last defeat by concentrating on aggressiveness and physicality. He noted that in the first quarter, the players successfully implemented strategies discussed in practice into the game.

Player Lethia Yazzie observed "open gaps" in the opposing defense early on, which allowed her to drive and score. She adapted her play as the opposition adjusted its defense by creating opportunities for teammates through passing.

Challenges arose in the second quarter due to turnovers and decreased aggressiveness. Coach Brady highlighted defensive lapses, stating that "when you do that at this level, you it's going to catch up to you and it did." Players also mentioned miscommunication and distractions from crowd noise affecting their performance.

Despite these setbacks, the experience was invaluable for the young team. Yazzie gained confidence facing large crowds, while April Peshlakai felt increased pressure from both opponents and spectators but saw it as a learning opportunity for next season.

Coach Brady expressed pride in reaching this stage of competition during his inaugural year. He stressed that such experiences are essential for growth, stating that "you have to lose one of these types of games in order to get to that next one."

With ten underclassmen returning next season and additional promising players potentially joining from junior varsity, Coach Brady is optimistic about future prospects. He highlighted strong district competitors like Navajo Prep, Tohachi, and Thoreau as preparation for challenging games ahead.

Brady underscored basketball as a "year-round" commitment with plans for a robust summer program crucial for development. The local community's support has revived enthusiasm for basketball in Newcomb.

In summary, although faced with challenges during their semifinal match-up, the Newcomb Lady Skyhawks displayed promise with a strong start and acquired valuable experience. With most of their roster returning next season along with lessons learned from this game, they have an encouraging outlook moving forward.
