Ok, so not every dog can be a fire dog, but on this National Pet Fire Safety Day, we hope that your family’s emergency planning includes four-legged, winged, swimming, or slithering best friends!
Here are a few tips:
Pet-proof your home! Take a walk
v (or crawl) around your house to see it from your pet’s perspective and see what dangers might be hiding. And secure your younger pets that might get in trouble.
Unattended flames are bad anyway, but leaving your pet alone with flames burning can be a recipe for disaster.
Practice escape routes with your pets! Make sure they can navigate the path-and make a plan to get the less-mobile ones out if you have time and it is safe to do so.
This extends to large-scale evacuations. Make sure you have a plan (food, water, leash, meds, etc.) to bring Fido, Fluffy, Bubbles, Tweety and anyone else with you.
It’s also worth noting that with temperatures soaring, please don’t leave your pets locked in your car and make sure they have shade and water outside too.
