The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office has arrested three suspects in connection for their believed involvement in a homicide that occurred on July 24, 2022. Eli Chaffin, 19, has been charged with murder in the 1st degree (open charge) and conspiracy to commit murder in the 1st degree. Tyler Chaffin, 23, has been charged with murder in the 1st degree (open charge), conspiracy to commit murder in the 1st degree, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, and tampering with evidence. Sierra Collins, 21, is also charged with accessory to murder in the 1st degree and conspiracy to commit murder in the 1st degree.
At approximately 12:03pm on July 24, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a residence on road 3400 in reference to a gunshot victim. When deputies arrived on scene, they discovered the victim, William Johnson, age 37 deceased. Witnesses stated they saw a white SUV pull up to the residence where two men exited the vehicle with weapons and fired multiple rounds at Johnson.
Based on footage obtained from a nearby residence, deputies were able to view the possible suspect vehicle. Through the course of an investigation and interviews, detectives were able to determine that Eli and Tyler Chaffin were probable suspects and were linked to a vehicle that matched the vehicle in the surveillance footage. At approximately 9pm deputies located the vehicle in Farmington and arrested the male suspects without incident.
SJCSO Detectives interviewed Sierra Collins for any information she may have had due to her ongoing relationship with William Johnson. Based on interviews and evidence collected through search warrants, Sierra Collins was also arrested for her involvement in the murder.
