Tips to Keep Kids Safe at the Fair

Tonight the carnival starts at the San Juan County fair and unfortunately, every year we have a frantic parent run to our booth or command post because they can't find their child.  With the large crowds, it happens easier than you would think.  So here are some tips to help in case this happens:

When you get there but BEFORE you start activities:

1.  Take a photo of your child - if your child does go missing, having a photo of exactly what they're wearing will be very helpful for our deputies to locate them quickly.

2.  Establish a home base - When you arrive, find a well lit, open area (possibly near our command post).  If your kids ever get lost and they can't find you, they should head to this home base location.

3.  Teach children to identify "safe" strangers - Teach your kids the difference between a stranger and somebody helpful (police, staff, security, etc.).  Ensuring your kids know who to approach if they're lost or need help is a big step in keeping them out of the hands of bad people and back by your side ASAP.

If every parents nightmare does come to light, stay calm and come report the missing child immediately.  We are there to help!

Be safe but have fun out there!!
