The Traditional Diné

Traditional | Aztec New Mexico

From December 2, 2022 post.

This month concludes our look into the traditional Diné, or Navajo, Calendar.

The month of December is named Nilch'itsoh, Great Winds or Increasing Cold Winds. December is mid-winter and Navajo children and adults alike are playing string games, shoe games and other winter games to keep their minds sharp and bodies fit. Coyote stories and other legends are being told to children during this time. Winter is the time when Spider Woman is asleep, so string games can now be played. Other cultures refer to string games as Cat’s Cradle.

What's your favorite string game figure? What winter stories do you like to tell?

Thank you very much to the park’s Administrative Officer, Matilda, for sharing her knowledge and stories.
