Medal of Commendation | Lupus in Saxonia
From February 24, 2023 post.
On January 13, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office held our annual awards banquet where we celebrate the great work of our staff. Over the course of a few weeks, we will highlight some of these awards and the staff that earned them.
Today we are recognizing three deputies that received the Medal of Commendation, Deputy Garrett Flack, Deputy Gabriel Salazar, Deputy Avery Washburn. The Medal of Commendation is presented to deputies who perform their duty to the highest standards and in a manner that demonstrates their dedication to achieving the mission of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.
On November 16, 2022, Deputies Flack, Salazar and Washburn responded to an address in Flora Vista for a male who was trapped under a vehicle. Deputy Flack arrived first, and with quick thinking, was able to use the jack that was already there to lift the truck off the male. Once the truck was lifted, Deputy Salazar and Deputy Washburn were able to pull the unconscious male from under the truck. Deputies could not find a pulse, so they immediately began CPR and continued those efforts until EMS arrived. EMS was eventually able to get a pulse and transported the male to the hospital. Approximately two weeks later, the male ultimately succumbed to his injuries, but the efforts by Deputy Flack, Deputy Salazar and Deputy Washburn gave the male his best chance to survive a very unfortunate accident.
