From February 28, 2023 post.

On January 13, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office held our annual awards banquet where we celebrate the great work of our staff. Over the course of a few weeks, we will highlight some of these awards and the staff that earned them.

Today we recognize Corporal Alex Jones who received the Lifesaving Medal. The Lifesaving Medal is presented to members whose quick actions and selfless response saved the life of another.

On July 4, 2022, Corporal Jones was dispatched to 16673 Highway 550 for a suicidal juvenile female. Upon arrival, he found a 14-year-old girl standing on top of a jersey barrier that stood over a 50 foot drop into a dry ditch. Corporal Jones approached the girl and attempted to gain rapport with her. As he spoke with the girl, he inched closer to her. When he got within reach of the girl, she stuck her right leg over the edge as if she was about to jump. Corporal Jones grabbed the girl's wrist and pulled her off of the barrier. During the investigation, Corporal Jones learned that the girl was, in fact, suicidal, and her sister had been encouraging her to jump off the bridge. By taking quick action when he was presented an opportunity, Corporal Jones prevented this girl from plunging off the bridge into the dry ditch below, and saved her life.
