Youth from five counties will be housed in the San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center.

San Juan, McKinley and Cibola counties currently have youth detained in the center as youth from Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties will soon be housed there as well. They are being held in Santa Fe County’s juvenile detention center right now, but county officials say the facility may soon close and it will no longer house juvenile inmates from outside of the county.

The state now has six juvenile detention centers and is preparing to move forward with the possibility of two of those centers ceasing operations.

San Juan County Juvenile Services states that the possibility of opening regional juvenile detention center has been broached with the northwest regional center being located in San Juan County.

San Juan County Commissioners have approved contracts with Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties to house juvenile inmates.
