New Mexico Corrections Department issued the following announcement on May 15.
The New Mexico Corrections Department Friday morning announced the results for all facility staff and inmate population surveillance tests.
On Friday May 8, 2020 NMCD completed testing of all staff working inside its prisons facilities. Surveillance testing of just over 25% of the inmate population was completed the following day. In total, 3,954 test kits were processed by Tricore Laboratories. All but one tested negative for the virus.
The one positive result is a male correctional officer at the state contracted Otero County Prison Facility, operated by Management and Training Corporation. The officer is now in self quarantine at home.
“Keeping our facility staff and inmate populations safe will continue to be my priority” said Cabinet Secretary Alisha Tafoya Lucero. “I am profoundly grateful to the brave men and women of the Department and our partner organizations. These heroes show up every day and give their all to keep our communities and facilities safe.”
All arrivals to NMCD’s intake facilities will be held in medical separation for 14-days and will be tested prior to being placed in general population units. In collaboration with the New Mexico Department of Health, NMCD will continue to conduct contact tracing and surveillance testing within prison facilities.
