2022 Pilgrimage to the Santuario in Chimayo

The Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office is preparing for 2022 Pilgrimage to the Santuario in Chimayo. Our office is dedicated to public safety and the wellbeing of walkers, community members and visitors.

Many people making the pilgrimage walk along the heavily trafficked State Road 76 which in within Rio Arriba County. Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Deputies have increased traffic patrols in this area.  

On Thursday evening, April 14th, Sheriff’s Deputies will begin patrols as walkers being to make their trek to Chimayo.

Rio Arriba County Emergency Management will be distributing glow sticks to walkers. This is a public safety measure, which helps to make walkers more visible to motorists at night.

The Sheriff’s Office Command post will be set up at The Arboleda Community Center and will be distributing waters along the roadway. This will also be a safe place off the roadway to take a break and hydrate before continuing the trek.

Our Office encourages walkers to take extra precautions to be more visible along the roadways, especially if they are walking at night.

Motorists are encouraged to reduce speeds, be cognitive, patient and courteous of walkers and other drivers. Leave enough space between you and the shoulder to allow walkers a safe space.

Safety Tips

• Wear bright clothing, reflective clothing preferred for walking at night

• Dress in layered clothing, the mornings are still cold

• Take a flashlight

• Wear comfortable shoes

• Don’t cross onto the roadway

• Walk in groups of at least three or more for safety reasons

• Don’t Drink and Drive

• Call 911 for emergencies
