We can’t possibly cover every scam out there. These con artists are crafty and come up with new ones all the time. But our Deputies hate hearing that our San Juan County citizens are getting scammed still. A caring deputy wants to warn our citizens that there are still calls being made, claiming to be the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and wanting money for a warrant. THIS time, it’s coming from the phone number 505-386-1382. We will NEVER ask for money for ANY reason.
But here is some general advice on how to prevent being tricked into a scam.
*Tell your mom, sister, or aunt not to send any money to a boyfriend that lives out of the country. I don’t care if they have been talking for six months, he’s not in trouble, he’s not stuck overseas, and his American bank hasn’t put a hold on his money; he just wants yours.
*We don’t care what her picture looks like on Instagram, #dontsendnudes! It’s probably a dude named Chuck and they will threaten to send the picture to all your friends and family if you don’t pay them what they want. (And they will send the pictures)
*If you have to pay money to get money, it’s a scam. If someone wants to pay you by check but wants you to wire some of the money or send them pictures of gift cards, RED FLAG.
*Actually, let’s just put it out there… No legitimate organization and ESPECIALLY not a government organization is going to accept gift cards as payment. If you are asked to buy gift cards, scratch off the silver strip and send a picture, you should probably second guess this decision. You are not actually a secret shopper; you are now a victim.
If you REALLY want to buy those gift cards though, you can always donate them to the San Juan County Sheriff's Office Foundation for Shop With Your Cop. They will at least be used to benefit children in our community and not a con artist in Nigeria.
Be diligent, be smart, be on guard, but most of all, be safe out there San Juan County!! And be sure to remind Gran and Gramps about the warnings above.
