Our Animal Control division would like the public to know that the local animal shelters are over capacity. What does this mean for our community? Those wishing to relinquish their pets are not currently able to take them to the Aztec Animal Shelter, nor can our Animal Control Officers pick up animals that owners wish to turn over ownership. With this being the case, owners are abandoning pets, which is a punishable offense resulting in a misdemeanor if charged, and up to a felony depending on the number of charges. Please call the animal shelters to see if there is availability if you do need to relinquish a pet.
There has also been a rise in animal cruelty charges being issued for pet owners neglecting their animals or putting down the animal themselves. Please be responsible pet owners!
