Did You Know It Is Illegal to Aim a Laser Pointer Beam at an Aircraft or the Flight Plan?

Did you know it is illegal to aim a laser pointer beam at an aircraft or the flight plan?  The consequences include up to 5 years in prison and up to $250,000 fine.  The FAA can impose an additional civil penalty to offenders of up to $25,000.  The FBI offers up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of someone intentionally aiming a laser at an aircraft.

The picture attached shows how much a laser beam can affect the vision of the aviation crew.

We are informing the public because we have had several instances of citizens on the ground illuminating the helicopter and crew with lasers. Not only could it result in temporary or permanent blindness, but it may also cause disorientation, loss of control of the aircraft, loss of the crew, and potentially injure or kill others on the ground.  We have had severe enough instances that we utilized our mapping systems, located individuals and referred them to the FAA.  If our crew has injuries, the offender can be charged with aggravated battery upon a peace officer, which is a third-degree felony.

If you have laser pointers in your home, please educate all household members of the dangers and potential consequences, not only for our aviation crews’ safety, but for the safety of the community as well.
