From December 20, 2022 post.
Aztec Ruins National Monument will be hosting a winter solstice observation this Wednesday, December 21, at sunset. To view this event, please arrive at the park around 4:30pm to join a ranger for a quick talk beforehand and to be escorted to the alignment location. The ranger will be presenting and beginning the walk in the picnic area. Please wear sturdy walking shoes, and dress for the weather.
Assuming the sky is clear, visitors will be able to observe the alignment of the north wall of Aztec West with the sunset position on the western horizon. During the winter solstice, the sunset location appears to “stand still” in its southernmost point on the horizon for multiple days. Viewing of the alignment at Aztec Ruins National Monument will only take place on Wednesday, December 21. Please note, the visitor center will close at 5pm and the park will close entirely after the sunset concludes.
